Taylor Russell McKenzie, who was born in Vancouver on July 18, 1994, grew up in Toronto and Vancouver. Russell was the daughter of a black man and a white mother. She grew up mainly with her mom's family. She stated that her skin color was a reason she felt disregarded by her peers as growing up. They struggled with their finances and were always in a state of flux, moving their lives 16 times to follow her father's profession. Russell said that despite the difficulties they faced, there was always an opportunity to reinventthemselves, to make something fresh. Russell's parents were financially struggling and she was always moving. Russell was only 18 when she took her first acting class. She used her earnings from work to purchase a vehicle and would then drive to Los Angeles, to audition. She would go back to work when her money ran out , before performing. The process continued for four consecutive years, until she was finally offered her first major television role.
